South Bend, IN – The Bowling Green Hot Rods (5-4, 43-34) used a pair of two-run home runs from Brandon Martin and Justin O’Conner in their 4-2 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (4-5, 49-29) on Friday night at Coveleski Stadium in Northern Indiana. Dyaln Floro earned his seventh win and struck out a career-high eight batters as the Hot Rods claimed series win against the first half Division champs.
Martin’s two-run home run put the Hot Rods in a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third inning. With one out, Joey Rickard was hit by a Brandon Sinnery pitch. The next batter was Martin, who deposited a Sinnery offering into the bleacher seats in left field for his third home run of the season and first since May 29.
The Silver Hawks scored a run right back in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI triple from Andrew Velazquez. In the top of the sixth inning, O’Conner put Bowling Green ahead 4-1 with his sixth home run of the season, a towering two-run shot that bounced off the Tiki Hut on the left field concourse.
Floro was on the mound spinning a gem for the Hot Rods, lasting six innings for the sixth consecutive start. The righty punched out a career high eight batters and lowered his season ERA to 2.03 in his six innings of one-run ball.
Marcus Jensen allowed an unearned run to come in to score in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth with Matt Ramsey on for the save, Andrew Toles threw out Rudy Flores at the plate for the second out as Flores was attempting to make it a 4-3 game. With two outs and the winning run at the plate, Ramsey induced a groundout to second base to save the game and send the Hot Rods to the series win.
