DAYTON, Ohio - WKU used a 10-0 run in the second half to expand a five point lead to 15 and coasted to a 84-67 win over host Wright State on Wednesday in the opening round of the Wright State Invitational.
WKU (9-2) will play for the championship of the Wright State Invitational on Friday looking for the 16th in-season invitational tournament title in program history and first since 1997-98.The Lady Toppers will face Florida A&M on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT in at Wright State.
Sophomore Chastity Gooch had 22 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Alexis Govan had 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Junior Bianca McGee added 16 points while freshman Micah Jones had 15 points via a career best five three-point field goals.
WKU's 9-2 start to the season and the Michelle Clark-Heard era ties that of Julia Yeater (1976-77) for the best 11-game record by a first-year head coach in Lady Topper history. WKU is also 6-0 on the road this season. It is the fifth time in program history that WKU has started the season with six straight wins on the road to start a season and the first since 1994-95. WKU is one win shy of becoming the fifth team in program history to win 10 games before the start of the new year.
After Wright State took their only lead of the first half at 19-18 following a three-point field goal from Breanna Stucke with 9:19 remaining in the half, the Lady Toppers closed the half on a 19-7 run to lead 37-26 at halftime. During the run, Govan scored six of her 10 first half points. She also finished the first half with five rebounds and six assists. Gooch added ten first half points and eight rebounds to help WKU get the double-digit lead at the half as the Lady Toppers shot 53.1 percent and held the Raiders to just 9-of-32 from the field at 28.1 percent.
WKU opened a 14-point lead to open the second half on a three by Jones to lead 40-26 before Wright State fought back to cut the lead to five at 54-49 and 56-51. After the Raiders cut it to five for the second time with 9:56 left at 56-51, the Lady Toppers scored 10 straight points to lead 66-51 as McGee scored twice during the run and Jones hit her fourth three of the game.
WKU scored at least 80 points in a game for the third time this season. The team did not reach that mark once during the 2011-12 season. WKU has won 48 consecutive games when scoring 80 points. WKU's last loss when scoring 80 points or more came March 14, 2002 when WKU suffered a 91-84 setback to Illinois in the WNIT in Champaign, Ill. All-time, WKU is 408-23 when reaching the 80-point plateau. WKU has won 79 of its last 80 games when scoring 80 points or more, dating to the start of the 2002-03 season.
WKU held Wright State (5-5) to just 36.9 percent shooting from the field for the game despite hitting eight three-point field goals.
