IRVINE, Calif. - Former WKU swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Claire Donahue continues to have a stellar career, as she along with current Hilltoppers Tyler Groneck and Tj Bland compete at the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex.
Donahue went into Thursday night's 50 butterfly prelims seeded first after finishing the morning session in 26.09. The Lenoir City, Tenn., native then came in second in the finals after hitting the wall in 26.11, just 0.12 seconds behind Kendyl Stewart's top time.
Groneck, a rising senior for the Hilltoppers, also performed well, finishing the 50 butterfly in 24.72 for a 35th place finish out of more than 60 swimmers. Bland, who will also be a senior for the Hilltoppers in 2014-15, competed in the 200 breast with a prelim time of 2:22.88.
The National Championships serve as the USA National Team selection for the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships as well as the World Championships. For more information on the event as well as to watch webcasts of the competition, visit USaSwimming.org.
Donahue, Groneck and Bland continue swimming on Friday with Donahue and Groneck in the 100 fly and Bland in the 50 breast. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. CT.
