NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Lipscomb scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Tuesday at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn., and that would prove to be the difference, as the WKU baseball team dropped a midweek contest to the Lipscomb, 2-0.

The shutout was Lipscomb’s first over WKU since the 2003 season, and the sixth overall in the series history between the two programs. It also marked the 11th time in the last 13 games that WKU and Lipscomb have been separated on the scoreboard by two runs or less.

Making his second start of the 2013 season, WKU junior Justin Hageman had his best outing of the season, working a season-high five innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out four Lipscomb batters. The start marked the seventh time in Hageman’s career that he has worked at least five innings and allowed one run or less in a starting role.

Lipscomb’s Gray Hutchinson opened the scoring in the fifth inning for Lipscomb, blasting his first home run of the season, a solo shot to give Lipscomb the 1-0 lead after four innings of scoreless baseball between the two teams. Griffin Moore would extend the lead for the Bison on a sacrifice fly in the next inning, giving Lipscomb a 2-0 lead through six innings, which would hold for the final.

Austin Clay and Taylor Haydel combined to toss three innings in relief for WKU, allowing just one run on three hits.

Regan Flaherty led WKU with a pair of hits, going 2-for-4, marking his 12th multi-hit game of the season, trailing only Scott Wilcox for the team lead in that category. Ryan Huck and Devin Kelly each reached base six times on the night, with both picking one hit apiece, while drawing two walks apiece.

The Hilltoppers (20-17, 10-5), tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference, will now travel to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday. South Alabama is one of two other teams tied with WKU atop the league standings, to go along with Florida Atlantic. Friday and Saturday’s games will both be 6:00 PM (CT) starts, with Saturday’s game being broadcast by the Sun Belt Network.
