BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Lady Topper Basketball overcame a 12-point deficit to post a 78-75 win over Austin Peay in the season opener for WKU at E.A. Diddle Arena on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Bianca McGee came off the bench to score 21 points to lead the Lady Toppers (1-0) to the victory over the Lady Govs (0-1).
Chastity Gooch, the junior All-America candidate, had 15 points and 15 rebounds as she reached the 15 point and rebound plateau in the same game for the fourth time in her career. Trailing 67-66, Gooch nailed a pair of free throws with 3:50 remaining to put WKU up for good, then extended the lead to 70-67 after a couple of WKU offensive rebounds gave Gooch another chance at a shot.
After Austin Peay cut it to 70-69 with2:19 left, Micah Jones extended the lead to 72-69 with a driving jumper and the Lady Govs would never get closer than two after that point.
COMING UP NEXT: WKU has a quick turnaround before facing Vanderbilt on Monday evening in Nashville at historic Memorial Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Last season, WKU led the Southeastern Conference foe 35-34 at halftime before the Commordores hit their first 11 shots of the second half and pulled out a 77-67 win over WKU in Bowling Green.
