BOWLING GREEN,Ky. (WBKO) - It's time to put the off-season, training camp and preseason preparations in the books because in less than 48 hours WKU will kick off its 2014 football season.
"We're ready to go we have worked very hard you know its time for us to go out there and test ourselves but have alot of fun and were ready," head coach Jeff Brohm said.
"Alot of people think once camp is done we should just stop and relax but this is when we step it up to the next level and prepare for what we have basically prepared for since last spring," WKU sophomore defensive lineman Kalvin Robinson said.
A new era. A new coach. A new conference. With all of the new changes the Hilltoppers will look to get back to its first bowl game in two seasons.
"We feel like we are a good football team and we do not want to look too much down the road. This is our first step and we have twelve steps down the way, hopefully we can move up the ladder but this is an important game but a tough one and it will definitely show us where were at and what we can do from here," Brohm said.
Friday night will be the battle for Bowling Green as the Hilltoppers will take on defending MAC champions Bowling Green State. It's a tough way to kick off a season but it could serve as a strong momentum booster if they can get the win
"We have a good idea on what we think they will do obviously its the first game and they are a new staff. But we have studied their personnel and staff and where coach Babers was last year as well but you know we feel like were ready to go," Brohm said.
If the Hilltoppers are going to have a successful season they are going to rely heavily on senior starting quarterback Brandon Doughty. Last season Doughty finished with 14 interceptions and 14 touchdowns. Now that Hilltoppers are in a tougher conference coach Brohm knows those numbers will not be acceptable this season.
"He had great experience last year he had some ups and down which is going to happen, I think he learned from them, he needs to come out and play well for us. He is the leader for this team, you know he needs to come out and do the things he did towards the end of the year which is take care of the football, make a few plays with his feet now and then when the plays aren't there. If he does that I think we will be successful," Brohm said.
