BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU football team held its first official spring practice and the first under new head coach Bobby Petrino on Friday at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. The practice kicked off five weeks of 15 total practices, including the annual Spring Game on April 20.
“It was fun to be on the field and get our first practice in," WKU head coach Bobby Petrino said. "We threw a lot at them. We had a good week of installs, so we were able to go out and throw a lot at them."
The team has put major emphasis on attention to detail this spring, as WKU will look to install new schemes on both sides of the ball.
“That has really been the key to our success in the past," Petrino said. "Our players have really bought in to the attention of the details and the techniques and the fundamentals and understanding that how you do that makes the scheme work. There are not any magical schemes out there. It is how well we get in a stance and get off and use our techniques. I like our team. I like the way that they have bought in to it.”
Friday was also the first time for quarterbacks Brandon Doughty, James Mauro and DeMarcus Smith to begin learning and implementing the new offensive scheme under head coach Bobby Petrino and offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm.
"I thought they all kind of pressed a little bit and were hurrying their drops," Petrino said of the quarterbacks. "They just have to learn to be consistent, trust their teammates and understand that it is all about timing. You have to be at the right spot on our drops, take the right hitch, get the ball out and make sure the receivers are where they need to be. So obviously we have a lot to work on in the entire passing game, but there is a lot of ability there and guys that can learn quickly. All of them have good leadership qualities. It is going to be fun to see how it all plays out over the spring.”
The Friday practice was the first of three practices this weekend, as the Hilltoppers are scheduled to practice at 10:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday. All of the practices will be open to the public.
