BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On their only scheduled non-practice day of fall camp, Western Kentucky University football student-athletes and coaches spent the morning lending a helping hand to the incoming WKU freshmen moving into the dorms on Sunday.
Members of the WKU football team welcomed the Class of 2016 to the Hill by surprising the students and their families by helping them carry various items to dorm rooms to help lighten the load as the students prepared for the beginning of Master Plan, which takes place the week prior to classes starting at WKU. The Hilltopper players and coaches reached out to every dorm on Sunday, giving assistance to anyone in need.
“I think this shows the character of our football team,” WKU head coach Willie Taggart said. “These kids don’t get upset about doing things like this. They really look forward to reaching out and helping the community and helping others. We want to continue to build our program and we are going to do it with our students and our community.”
The Hilltoppers have had at least one practice in 13 consecutive days prior to Sunday’s scheduled day off. Despite the rare break from the field, all WKU coaches and players devoted time to helping the incoming freshmen.
“I applaud our players and coaching staff for devoting time on a Sunday morning to help our Class of 2016 move in,” WKU Director of Athletics Todd Stewart said. “They weren’t told to do it. They wanted to help out because we are all part of the Hilltopper family. It was a lot of fun for everyone.”
WKU will enjoy Sunday off before preparing for the final week of fall camp this upcoming week, ending on Saturday, August 25 with a practice, followed by Family Fun Day from 4:00-6:00 PM at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. The annual event is free to the public and will involve a free tour of the WKU football weight room and training room, along with a Fun Zone for kids and an opportunity for fans to interact and get autographs from WKU players and coaches. Free Coke products and popcorn will be provided to the first 500 fans in attendance.
The Hilltoppers open the 2012 season at home against Austin Peay at 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 1 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. Tickets are available at WKUsports.com, or by calling 1-800-5 BIG RED.
