TROY, Ala. — A 17-2 run in the second half helped power WKU by Troy Saturday afternoon in Troy, Ala., 60-51, and the Hilltoppers moved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play with the win.
Coupled with Thursday's 58-56 win at South Alabama, WKU won both games on the Alabama road swing in the same season for the first time in school history.
George Fant led WKU with 12 points and nine rebounds in the game, and O'Karo Akamune, Caden Dickerson, Chris Harrison-Docks and T.J. Price all had nine. Troy was paced by 11 points and nine rebounds by Tevin Calhoun.
Despite holding Troy to 15.6 percent shooting in the first half (5-for-32) and no points for the first 6:31 and the final 3:06 of the half, WKU led by just four points at halftime, 21-17. T. Price led WKU with seven first-half points, and Akamune had four points and four rebounds off the bench in his first action of the season after coming back from injury.
Troy missed its first 13 shots of the game, allowing WKU to lead 9-0, but the Trojans regrouped and led by one point at 15-14 with 5:37 to go in the first half.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, WKU scored 10-straight points to take a 37-28 lead while Troy missed four-straight shots. From there, WKU extended the run to 17-2 over 5:55 to enlarge its lead to 44-30 and never looked back.
After shooting 55.2 percent in the second half (16-for-29), WKU finished the game at 47.2 percent (25-for-53). Troy was limited by 28.3 percent shooting (17-for-60).
WKU had 34 points in the paint and saw 23 points come from its reserves.
WKU committed just 11 turnovers in the game, giving the Hilltoppers 13 or fewer turnovers in six of the last eight contests.
WKU returns to E.A. Diddle Arena on Thursday at 7:00 PM (CT) to face Georgia State in the first game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference homestand. Thursday's game will be televised by the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network, airing nationally on ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court and regionally on WKU PBS and WBNA. It will also be broadcast on the radio on the Hilltopper IMG Sports Network, airing locally in Bowling Green on WKLX-FM Sam 100.7, with Randy Lee and Hal Schmitt on the call.
