BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Looking to post their fourth conference sweep of the season, WKU returns to the court on Wednesday night in the Sunshine State looking for a second win this season over Florida Atlantic. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast on the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network with Jeff Younglove and Hal Schmitt. The game will be available on WKYU-PBS in Bowling Green.
Earlier this year, WKU posted an 86-68 win over FAU when three Lady Toppers scored 20 or more points in a game for the first time since Jna. 27, 2005 as the trio of Chastity Gooch (28), Bianca McGee (23) and Alexis Govan (20) each reached the mark.
The Lady Toppers led by six at intermission, but a quick three by the Owls cut that advantage in half in the opening minute of the second period. Leading by five, a Chaney Means layup at the 17:36 mark sparked a 13-2 run as WKU stretched its lead to 50-34 after a Gooch three-point play with 13:51 remaining. The advantage grew to 17 with a pair of Govan free throws made the score 58-41 with 11:17 on the clock, but Florida Atlantic chipped away over the next three minutes to cut its deficit down to six (62-56) after a Kimberly Smith three with 7:26 remaining. After trading baskets, McGee knocked down a three then got a steal and pull-up jumper to push the lead back to 11 points with just under six minutes remaining. The lead remained in double figures the rest of the game, getting as high as 20 points on two occasions in the closing minutes.
WKU has had a strong showing throughout the 2012-13 season on the road, winning 8-of-11 contests that they have played and 9-of-12 they have played away from home. WKU was just 1-13 on the road a year ago. Before WKU suffered its first road defeat of the season on Jan. 6, it was one of just 18 teams across the nation to have an unblemished road record through Jan. 5. It was one of only five teams from a non-AQ league to stay unblemished on the road through Jan. 5, being joined on the list by Charlotte, Old Dominion, Tulane and Gonzaga.
WKU's eight road wins in 2012-13 are quickly climbing the all-time single season road wins list in WKU history. The eight wins on the road mark the 14th time in program history that WKU has won eight road games or more in a single season. The school record is 12.
Following a pair of games in Florida, WKU returns home to face ULM on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in E.A. Diddle Arena. It is one of just three home games remaining on the schedule. Single game tickets are available through the WKU Ticket Office by calling 270-745-5222 or 1-800-5-BIG-RED. Tickets can also be ordered online at www.wkusports.com.
