BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Western Kentucky enters Saturday's Sun Belt Conference opener at South Alabama aiming to be takers instead of givers.
The Hilltoppers (1-1) committed seven turnovers in last week's 52-20 loss at Tennessee, including five in six first-quarter plays that resulted in 31 unanswered points. Coach Bobby Petrino says the poor effort was something he'd never seen; quarterback Brandon Doughty says he "lost some sleep" after the Volunteers returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns.
Add in two fumbles against Kentucky and WKU has nine turnovers and ranks next to last in Football Bowl Subdivision turnover margin (minus-7). Those mistakes have led to a back-to-basics approach in practice re-emphasizing improved ball protection and reads that the Hilltoppers hope prevents them from being generous against the Jaguars (1-1).
