WKU Signee Kaleb Duckworth Named Gatorade Kentucky Baseball Player Of The Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball signee and Henderson County High School product Kaleb Duckworth has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade Kentucky Baseball Player of the Year, The Gatorade Company in partnership with USA Today High School Sports announced Tuesday.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Duckworth as Kentucky’s best high school baseball player.

Duckworth, a 2013 First-Team All-State selection as a junior, has been dominant as a senior with the Colonels, leading Henderson County to a 23-13 record entering Tuesday’s Second Region Tournament semifinal game against Christian County. The versatile infielder and outfielder is hitting .447 with seven home runs and 35 RBI during his senior season. Duckworth has scored 40 runs, stolen 38 bases and sports a slugging percentage of .868 and on-base percentage of .656.

In the classroom, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Duckworth has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.84. Duckworth is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Salvation Army.

Duckworth signed with WKU after a stellar junior season at Henderson County in which he led the state in home runs (11) and stolen bases (36). He hit .456, drove in 32 RBI and had an on-base percentage of .588 from his lead off position with the Colonels last spring, earning First-Team All-State, All-Region and All-District honors in the process.

Duckworth led Henderson County to back-to-back state semifinal appearances in 2012-13, was named to the All-Kentucky Team by USA Today in 2013 and is rated as a Top 10 player in the state of Kentucky by Prep Baseball Report.

Duckworth’s Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year honor makes him a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball softball and boys and girls track and field. Gatorade awards one National Player of the Year in each sport and the selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA Today High School Sports.
