MIAMI, Fla. - Florida International's Johanna Volz scored in the 95th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 win over WKU in overtime at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
FIU (6-5-1, 3-1-0), the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference in a vote of the league's coaches, broke a streak of nearly 700 minutes that the Lady Toppers had gone in Sun Belt Conference play without a goal dating to last season. WKU's active streak of over 500 minutes without allowing a goal, dating to Sept. 9, was also broken.
Western Kentucky University (8-4-0, 3-1-0) was held scoreless for just the second time in 12 games this season.
The Lady Toppers had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to get a ball past FIU keeper Kaitlyn Savage.
The most notably opportunity came early in the second half when senior Amanda Buechel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went one-on-one with an FIU defender before her shot hit off the right crossbar. Chrissy Tchoula's (Noblesville, Ind.) rebound attempt was saved by the keeper. It was Buechel's only shot attempt of the game. She entered the game as WKU's leading scorer with seven goals on season.
After playing 90 minute of scoreless soccer, Lady Toppers had to play their second consecutive overtime game after not reaching extra time in their first ten contests of the season. It marked the third straight game between the Lady Toppers and FIU that had reached overtime.
