BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Garnering a season record of 41-16, the Western Kentucky University softball team has been selected to play in its first-ever NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday night on ESPNU.

The Lady Toppers, the Sun Belt Conference Regular-Season Champions, head to the Tuscaloosa Regional that will feature host and national 10th seed Alabama (42-13) from the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Sun Tournament Champions USC Upstate (41-10) and Jacksonville State (30-25), winners of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The regional round of play features a four-team double elimination bracket, and WKU’s opening-round contest will come against USC Upstate at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Alabama and Jacksonville State will play in Friday’s later game at 6 p.m.

A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Championship with 31 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 33 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally.

The Sun Belt Conference had three teams selected to the field as SBC Tournament Champion South Alabama received a No. 13 national seeding to host while Louisiana-Lafayette also earned an at-large bid. It is first time in the conference’s history that three teams will move on to NCAA postseason play.

Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 23-26. In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City May 30-June 4.
