BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—The Western Kentucky University softball team (24-13-1, 6-3) battled No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette (28-6-1, 9-0) to avoid the series sweep, but the Ragin’ Cajuns would take the final game 6-4 on Sunday at the WKU Softball Complex.

WKU put together nine hits off of ULL’s pair of pitchers with junior Jacqueline McGill and freshman Andie Martin having two hits each, including McGill’s first home run of the season. The Lady Toppers had five hits and three runs off of starter Jordan Wallace (13-2) while notching the four other hits and one run against Christina Hamilton in the last three innings. The two pitchers combined for four walks and five strikeouts.

Senior Emily Rousseau (13-9) threw the complete game with 10 hits allowed with three walks and four strikeouts. ULL’s Natalie Fernandez went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead the Cajuns.

McGill’s home run gave WKU the first advantage of the contest, as she took a solo shot over left field in the first at-bat of the second inning. The lead held until a four-run fifth inning for ULL gave the visitors a 4-1 lead. ULL used two infield hits and two hits up the middle to center field plus a walk to gain the momentum.

WKU immediately responded in the bottom frame to make it a 4-3 ballgame. With senior Olivia Watkins standing on second after a walk and stolen base, senior Kelsie Mattox put a RBI single up the middle before moving two more bases on the throw to get Watkins at the plate. Mattox then came home on a pitch in the dirt for the second run of the frame.

The Cajuns cushioned their lead in the top seventh to 6-3. Two hits and a walk allowed the first score in before the bases loaded with another walk. Sara Corbello was then hit by pitch to force the final run home. WKU began a rally in the bottom seventh after junior Shawna Sadler reached on a fielder’s choice, McGill singled to right center field and Martin walked to load the bases with one out in the inning. Freshman Bethany Oglesby then hit into a fielder’s choice to bring in Sadler, but the rally would fall short after the lone run.
