BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—The Western Kentucky University softball team (22-13) used two run-ruled victories Wednesday to sweep Samford (11-24) at the WKU Softball Complex.

Junior Amanda Thomas belted a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning of game one to lift WKU to an 8-0 win. The home run gave Thomas sole possession of first place as WKU’s all-time home run leader with 29 in her career.

The Lady Toppers carried their offensive momentum into game two, as WKU grabbed a 10-0 win in five innings.

Game One-WKU 8, Samford 0 (Six innings)

WKU posted 11 hits, including Thomas’ ninth home run of the season, while junior Emily Rousseau threw a one hitter in the day’s first game to notch the 8-0 victory.

Thomas went 2-for-4 at the plate while sophomore Shawna Sadler went 2-for-3 with a run. Sophomore Sammi McGraw tabbed two RBI.

Rousseau (12-5) went the distance to allow just one hit that came in the first at-bat of the second inning while striking out seven with no walks. The Louisiana native retired the last 13 batters on her way to the victory.

WKU scored its first runs of the contest in the fourth inning after McGraw put down a two-RBI single for the 2-0 lead.

The Lady Toppers closed the door in the sixth after adding six runs off of four hits. After an error, stolen base and single to advance to third, senior Katrina Metoyer scored the frame’s first run after the Bulldogs were not able to record the out at home. Sadler then made her way home on a sophomore Jacqueline McGill RBI single through the left side to set the score at 4-0. With bases loaded, Thomas stepped to the plate to end the game with her second grand slam of her career, as she hit one on March 7, 2012, in an 11-0 win at Florida Atlantic.

Game Two-WKU 10, Samford 0 (Five innings)

The bats stayed hot in game two, as WKU recorded 10 hits, including four extra-base hits, to defeat Samford 10-0 in a run-ruled five-inning victory.

A trio of Lady Toppers tabbed two runs each in senior Ciara Garcia and fellow classmates Mallorie Sulaski and Metoyer.

Sulaski (6-6) did a majority of the work in the circle, as she allowed three runs while striking out three and walking one in four innings of work. Sophomore Janna Scheff closed out the win in the fifth with one hit and two walks allowed.

The Lady Toppers added at least one run in each of their offensive innings, as the team carried a 1-0 lead after the first. Garcia notched a RBI triple for the early advantage, scoring junior Olivia Watkins.

Sulaski opened the second frame with a single to left before scoring off of Metoyer’s double. Freshman Brooke Holloway and sophomore Preslie Cruce then made their way home on a Garcia single to put the score at 4-0.

Two more runs came in the third with RBI from Sulaski and freshman Brooke Holloway. With a 6-0 advantage going to the home half of the fourth, senior Kellie Quarles tabbed a two-RBI single to bring in McGraw and freshman Bethany Oglesby. McGill and Metoyer added the game’s final runs off of wild pitches.
