BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The 2012-13 basketball season is officially underway at WKU following Hilltopper Hysteria festivities at E.A. Diddle Arena Friday night.
Following a 3-0 win by the 20th-ranked Lady Topper volleyball team over FIU, the basketball portion of the evening got underway with introductions of the Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers. While the cheerleaders showed off a new routine for the estimated 3,500 fans in attendance, the two squads prepared for their 12-minute scrimmages.
In the Lady Toppers' scrimmage, the Red team earned a 20-18 win over the Gray team. Danay Fothergill led the Red squad with seven points, and Mariah Sunkett had seven rebounds. The Gray team was paced by nine points from Alexis Govan. Nine different Lady Toppers scored in the game.
The men's scrimmage was a similarly close game, with the Red team picking up a 22-18 win over the Black squad. Ten different Hilltoppers found the bottom of the net, with Aleksejs Rostov led the Black team with seven points and three rebounds. Jamal Crook had eight points to pace the Red team.
The evening concluded with the three-point and slam dunk contests. Fothergill and Caden Dickerson defeated Brandon Harris and Bianca McGee in the three-point contest, 13-10, and Kene Anyigbo won the slam dunk contest over Eddie Alcantara and George Fant.
The Hilltoppers officially begin practice for the upcoming 2012-13 season on Saturday morning. The Lady Toppers opened practice on October 1.

The Hilltoppers play two exhibition games at E.A. Diddle Arena before starting the regular season on November 10 at Southern Miss. WKU hosts Campbellsville (Ky.) on October 29 and Kentucky Wesleyan on November 3 in preseason tune-ups. The Lady Toppers welcome Harding to Bowling Green for an exhibition game on November 2 and will begin the 2012-13 campaign on November 9 at Murray State.
