LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Western Kentucky University volleyball team opens the 2012 season ranked No. 33 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Preseason Poll, as announced by the organization.
“It’s a good thing to be getting respect nationally going into the year,” WKU head coach Travis Hudson said. “It says a lot about your program in general. We definitely have a challenge in front of us, as we play five teams who are ranked above us in the first month, so we have some work to do.”
Tied with LSU after receiving 24 points, it’s the highest start in the preseason poll for WKU since the team’s first appearance at No. 44 in 2006. The Lady Toppers are also the only Sun Belt Conference school in the poll.
WKU is scheduled to play six teams featured in the poll, including three in the top 25. In the opening weekend, WKU will take on No. 3 Penn State and No. 31 Louisville. The Lady Toppers will be on the road against No. 23 Michigan and No. 39 Cincinnati while hosting No. 24 Ohio State and No. 28 Dayton in the WKU Tournament.
Last season the Lady Toppers entered the top 25 for the first time in school history, as they ranked No. 24 heading into their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years. WKU finished the season with a 31-4 record overall and 15-1 in the Sun Belt while claiming the regular season and tournament titles.
The 2012 season draws near for WKU, as the team is in preparations for its opening weekend on August 24 in Louisville.
