Bowling Green, Ky. - After averaging 21 points per game during the holiday break - including a 40-point effort in a win over North Texas - Western Kentucky University sophomore guard Alexis Govan was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

It marks the second time this season that Govan has earned the league's weekly honor, also doing so on Dec. 7. With fellow sophomore Chastity Gooch winning the award on Nov. 20, the Lady Toppers have taken home Player-of-the-Week honors three times in a season for the first time since 2008-09.

The highlight of Govan's impressive two-week stretch came in the final game of 2012 as she dropped in 40 points on 16-for-20 shooting in a win over North Texas on Dec. 29. She became the fifth player in the nation this season to record a 40-point game, and fell just two points shy of equaling both the WKU and Diddle Arena record for points in a game, held by Crystal Kelly when she scored 42 against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 23, 2008. It was also the fourth 40-point performance in Lady Topper history, joining Kelly, Natalie Powers (41 vs. Middle Tennessee, Feb. 1, 2001) and Brenda Chapman (40 vs. Murray State, Jan. 21, 1978).

Govan scored in double figures in all five Lady Topper games during the break, helping WKU to a 4-1 record. She shot 53.9 percent from the field over that span, also averaging 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. She currently ranks 29th nationally, and third in the Sun Belt, in scoring at 19.5 points per game, while ranking in the top 100 nationally in both field goal percentage (.469) and free throw percentage (.831).
