Bowling Green, Ky. - For the second time this season, Western Kentucky University senior defensive lineman Quanterus Smith has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith set a Sun Belt Conference record with a career-best five sacks in WKU's 14-6 win at Florida International on Saturday. Not only does Smith now lead the nation with 11.5 sacks on the season, but his five sacks against the Panthers were the most in a game this season by an FBS player. His efforts helped the Hilltoppers equal a Sun Belt record with nine total sacks Saturday night. That equaled the third-highest total by an FBS team in a game this season.

In addition to his sack numbers, Smith led the Hilltoppers with eight total tackles at FIU. His final sack of the game came on the last play when the Panthers had driven deep into WKU territory looking for the potential game-tying score. That play also resulted in a forced fumble that WKU recovered for its fourth turnover of the game.

Smith's individual sack total is more than that of 22 FBS teams. At 1.64 sacks per game, he is the only player in the Sun Belt to average more than a sack per game. Smith also owns three of the top eight single-game sack totals in the nation this season with 5.0 against FIU, 3.5 against Arkansas State and 3.0 against #1 Alabama.

The Hilltoppers improved to 6-2 and 3-1 in the Sun Belt Conference with their win on Saturday, becoming bowl eligible for the second straight season. WKU will have a short week of preparation before hosting Middle Tennessee at 8:15 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday (Nov. 1) in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
