NEW ORLEANS—Western Kentucky University volleyball players Jordyn Skinner and Ashley Potts were tabbed the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances against Lipscomb and at the Coke/Michigan Invitational this past week, the league office announced Monday.
Skinner and Potts led the Lady Toppers to an undefeated weekend and the Coke/Michigan Invitational championship, which included a marquee win over No. 22 Michigan. It was the second ranked opponent WKU has defeated in the past week, as it took down No. 10 Dayton the previous Friday. The Lady Toppers also defeated Duke and Eastern Michigan over the weekend.
It is the third time that a Lady Topper earned the weekly award this season, as redshirt junior Paige Wessel was named SBC Player of the Week last week. The honor marks the third time in each of the pair’s career to receive a weekly award, as Skinner was named player of the week and defensive player of the week last year and Potts earned the defensive award twice last season.
Skinner, from Grand Rapids, Mich., had a big weekend in her home state and earned the Coke/Michigan Invitational Most Valuable Player honor. She posted a double-double in every match of the tournament to increase her career total to 29. The senior has registered 10 double-digit kill and eight double-digit dig matches this season, and led the team with 19 kills against the Wolverines to tie her season high.
The outside hitter currently leads the team and ranks eighth in the SBC in kills with 186 on the year and a 3.26 per set average. Skinner is also second on the squad in both digs with 164 and service aces with 15.
Potts, a native of Louisville, Ky., tallied 64 digs over the weekend and earned a spot on the Coke/Michigan Invitational All-Tournament team. The defensive specialist notched a season-high 24 digs in the victory over EMU and has recorded double-digits in all but one match this season.
The junior leads the team and ranks fifth in the SBC in digs with 262 on the season and a 4.60 average per set. Potts was second on the team this week in service aces, including a new season-high of three against Michigan. On the season, she is second on the squad in assists with 35.
Skinner and Potts was named SBC Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, and both received the postseason honors last season after posting a 31-4 (15-1 SBC) record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last nine years.
WKU (13-3) plays its final non-conference match on Tuesday, September 18 at Belmont (4-9) at 6 p.m. The Lady Toppers will then open league play in Bowling Green this weekend, as they face Troy on Friday night and South Alabama on Saturday.
