AP Award-winning weathercaster Shane Holinde recently earned the coveted broadcast seal of approval from the National Weather Association. He joined the First Alert Storm Team in the spring of 2001. In 2003, he became the weeknight forecaster for WBKO @ 5, 6, and 10. Shane is the only TV forecaster in Bowling Green who has lived in the Blue Grass state his entire life. His passion for meteorology began when he was a small boy growing up near Owensboro. Many an hour was spent on the front porch of his family’s home watching thunderstorms roll in from the west (until the lightning got too close!). Shane also became a “TV weather junkie” as a child, idolizing on-air meteorologists such as Tom Skilling and fellow Owensboro native Paul Emmick. He even performed weathercasts for his classmates in elementary school, using poster boards to draw national and regional maps. These days, Shane considers it a privilege to be forecasting South-Central Kentucky’s weather on a nightly basis. He enjoys the challenge of putting together an accurate and informative forecast for the area. In April 2006, he was honored by the KY Associated Press for “Best Weathercast” in Television Division II. Shane has been a member of the National Weather Association for 5 years. In 2002, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Kentucky University, where he double majored in Broadcasting and Geoscience studies. While at WKU, Shane was active in the campus newscast, not only anchoring weather but as a producer and news reporter/anchor. During his senior year, he completed a weather internship at WLKY in Louisville. In Fall 2004, Shane returned to his alma mater to serve as an instructor for a broadcast meteorology course. Besides his work in television, Shane also possesses a radio background, cutting his teeth as a news reporter/disc jockey at WWHR (WKU’s campus radio station), and manning the controls of an Owensboro sound-a-light show unit appropriately known as “Thunder and Lightning Music.” “I strongly encourage anyone with interest in on-air meteorology to get some radio experience. It did wonders for me,” he says. Shane stays active in the community, volunteering his time for annual events such as the Trashmasters Classic at Barren River Lake, the Edmonson County Farm Safety Camp, and others. He also serves as a local volunteer for the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Kentucky. He visits elementary and high schools frequently, sharing his enthusiasm for the science of weather with area students. Shane and his wife of five years, Brenda, currently reside in Bowling Green. They are proud owners of a 2-year-old dachshund named Delaney. The two are self-proclaimed “parrotheads” (Jimmy Buffett fans) and are members of the area’s Lost River Parrotheads Club, an organization that raises money for local charities. In his free time, Shane enjoys reading, bike-riding, listening to music, watching sports, and spending time with friends and family.
