RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) -- The National Weather Service has determined a tornado with winds of 120 mph hit Madison County, killing a woman and destroying dozens of homes.
Meteorologist Nathan Foster says the EF2 tornado struck on Friday the Kirksville community of Richmond, about 20 miles south-southeast of Lexington.
Gov. Steve Beshear declared a state emergency in central and south eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
Madison County emergency management spokeswoman Roma Pedeau said authorities are investigating the extent of damage and total number of injuries.
Both the county and the city of Richmond have declared states of emergency, said Buddy Rogers, spokesman for the state Division of Emergency Management. He said 40 Kentucky National Guard troops were deployed to assist with traffic control and security.
