(WBKO) -- The 2nd Annual David Heard Memorial Bass Fishing Tournament took place on Saturday at Barren River Lake.
The tournament raises awareness for water safety, in honor of 19-year-old David Heard of Alvaton, who passed away in 2016.
The event also raises money for a memorial scholarship in David's name at WKU.
According to family members, nearly 40 fishermen participated in the tournament this weekend. That number doesn't include the numerous kids who fished from the shore.
David's brother, John Mark, said the value of the tournament isn't quantifiable.
"The tournament is a way for our family to honor David in the best way we know possible," John Mark said. "The support, donations, and turnout we received this year was above and beyond what we had expected."
He went on to say that during the raffle and auctions, $3,800 worth of contributions went toward the scholarship.
Once the David Heard Memorial Scholarship is endowed at WKU, it will exist for as long as WKU gives scholarships at the university.
Four students that belong to WKU's Bass Fishing Team were announced as official scholarship recipients on Saturday.
