Western Kentucky Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates Sports Medicine Outreach Program was developed to provide student athletes and coaches access to Nationally Certified Athletic Trainers. The Athletic Trainers are credentialed by the NATA (National Athletic Trainer's Association) and BOC (Board of Certification). Members of our Sports Medicine Outreach Program team work closely with the physicians at Western Kentucky Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates to provide a cycle of care which spans from the playing field (site of injury), to the physician's office (acute intervention), to the physical therapy clinic (aggressive rehabilitation), and back to the training room and playing field (functional recovery).
Certified Athletic Trainers provide information, game and practice coverage, treatment of and rehabilitation following sports related injuries. Our Athletic Trainers also play a key role in injury prevention and management. A computer injury tracking system is utilized by our staff to track trends and to make necessary modifications in order to assure that athletes are performing at their safest level.
Trainers provide local and away game coverage for the county and city school system. Over 2,500 injured student athletes have been treated over the last five years. The Sports Medicine Outreach Program also provides pre-season KHSAA physical exams to area student athletes with 100% of the profits being donated back to the local sports programs in form of medical supplies.
The Sports Medicine Outreach Program has been certified by the Cincinnati Sportsmedicine Reasearch and Education Foundation in Sportsmetrics™. The program is a scientifically proven training system that not only addresses injury prevention but enhances competitive athletic performance. Sportsmetrics™ is a six week training program that provides a solid foundation of strength, coordination and overall physical conditioning to enable athletes to attain their highest potential in their sport-specific skills.
