BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- A new phone scam is making the rounds, and Better Business Bureaus nationwide are trying to get the word out.
The “can you hear me now?” scam has previously targeted businesses, but a new twist is now targeting consumers.
How the scam works:
You pick up your phone and the caller asks “can you hear me?” They are wanting you to answer “yes” or “sure” so they can record your voice.
This “yes” may be used later to make it sound like you authorized a major purchase.
BBB tips to avoid a phone scam:
-Screen your calls. Use your Caller ID to screen your phone calls. If you don’t recognize a number, don’t pick up the phone.
-Hang up the phone. Don’t say yes or give out any other information.
-Monitor your banking and credit card information. Check your statements regularly for any unusual activity.
-Consumers can visit bbb.org/scamtracker to report any calls and to warn others.
