HORSE CAVE, Ky. (WBKO) -- UPDATE
Jan. 15, 2019
A group of seniors at Caverna High School said after they learned about the death of their former English teacher, who was killed in a car accident on Sunday, they wanted to do something to honor her.
Kaci Wilson, most recently a Warren County Public Schools teacher at Jennings Creek Elementary, taught for two years prior at Caverna High School in Horse Cave.
Wilson was pronounced dead on Sunday afternoon, after a three-vehicle collision on Campbell Lane in Bowling Green.
"I miss her already," said BreeAnna Lawless, one of Ms. Wilson's former students at Caverna High School.
Several Caverna students went to their principal and guidance counselor on Monday with the idea of holding a candlelight vigil to honor Ms. Wilson.
With the idea not only approved but also encouraged, students planned the vigil for Tuesday night at 5:00 in front of the high school.
"I think it's a positive way we as a school and remember her and the impact she had upon our staff and our students," said Caverna High School Principal Matt Bastin.
Students say Ms. Wilson was one of those teachers that makes a lasting impact.
"She had a heart of gold and she was truly an amazing person," said Katrina Hensley, one of Ms. Wilson's former students.
"She was more than a teacher, she was a friend," added classmate, Mary Russell.
Dozens of students showed up for the vigil outside the high school on Tuesday night, bundled up and more than willing to stand in the cold, to light candles and release balloons in honor of their former teacher.
Many of them even wrote messages on their balloons saying things like, 'Fly high beautiful angel, love you.'
After talking with students, it was clear they had formed a bond with Ms. Wilson.
"She was so funny, she was energetic," said Hensley.
"She was really intelligent," added Lawless. "She loved Shakespeare, that's one thing I'm going to also remember about her, she loved books."
Ms. Wilson's picture and her name lit up in candles, now rest outside by a tree in front of the high school where she touched so many lives.
"I think it's going to remind everyone of her because she was so bright as a person," added Lawless.
She went on to say, "I know she would've loved this and she'd be proud of us right now."
It is unclear if Warren County Schools is holding any ceremonies or vigils for Ms. Wilson. We will be sure to provide that information to you if we learn of any.
