DeWitt to lead Monroe County boys basketball program

TOMPKINSVILLE — Monroe County High School didn't go far to find a new boys' basketball coach.

Former Allen Cpunty-Scottsville girls' basketball coach Garry DeWitt was appointed Thursday to lead the Falcons this upcoming season, replacing Steve Kirkpatrick.

DeWitt led the Lady Patriots for nearly a decade, winning 93 games and three consecutive 4th Region championships from 1999-2001.

He says he's embarking on a new challenge but looking forward to doing it in an area and a district he's all too familiar with.

"I've never coached boys, to be honest with you. I've coached baseball but always coached girls' basketball," Dewitt said. "(Monroe County athletic director John Petett) called, and we talked, and thought that'd be a great opportunity for someone who's getting ready to retire from his regular job that he worked all those years and just to have an opportunity to come over here.

"Monroe County has a great athletic program and I'm excited about the opportunity to see where we can go."
