Fire crews battle flames at Kingsford charcoal plant
Several first response teams battled flames at Kingsford Manufacturing in Summer Shade on Monday.
Officials say they were dispatched just after noon when they were asked for assistance at the plant.
Witnesses say two silos blew after flames ignited inside those silos.
Fire crews arrived quickly but requested extra assistance to help contain the fire, which they were able to do. However, because charcoal is manufactured there, it took several hours to completely extinguish.
"We got a call at about 12:38 p.m.," said Emory Kidd, Director of Emergency Management in Metcalfe County. "They had a small fire at Kingsford. We responded, after the first department got here, due to the shortage in volunteers they requested additional manpower. We've got eight departments total here."
Kingsford did not respond to our request for comment.
There were no injuries reported.
