The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says its working to approve construction to U.S. 31-W in Richpond that would widen the highway lanes.

The rapidly growing area and narrow lanes have contributed to traffic congestion recently. KYTC has taken notice to this and they say widening the highway would have a significant impact on the area.

That construction could take some time to be approved, though.

"That is a much longer-term project and it's not going to happen anytime soon, but that project is in motion," said Wes Watt, Public Information Officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3. "Once those two projects do get on the ground and completed, that corridor will see a big improvement in traffic flow and safety."

The project would be completed in two separate phases. The first, near the Richmond Marketplace and South Warren High School. The second -- from Buchanon Park to the Simpson County line.

KYTC says that doing two separate projects may extend the timeline, but is more feasible financially and would create a severe traffic issue if done all at once.

The expected completion dates are unknown at this time, but KYTC says it could be several years before the highway is widened.
