Mosquito and tick population in south central Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - We had a very warm and wet winter, which were ideal conditions for the mosquito and tick population to skyrocket.

That's why insect repellent of all kinds is flying off the shelves of area stores.

The Barren River District Health Department says: repellents that contain Deet are the most effective and long-lasting, but should not be used on very small children.

"Wear long sleeves. Make sure they have repellent both on their skin and on their clothes. To wear long pants, boots, and just protect themselves in that manner," said Alex Weston with the Barren River District Health Department.

Weston also says Kentucky has very low rates of tick-borne and mosquito-borne disease and you can help prevent mosquitoes from breeding at your home by getting rid of any standing water on your property.
