New Kentucky licenses expected to roll out statewide by May

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- Kentucky's new driver's licenses are expected to be rolled out gradually in March 2019, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

"They will take it phase by phase and introduce it into the other counties across 120 counties, but there are a lot more than drivers license site throughout the state," explained Coe Fields.

The Confident Kentucky Initiative will offer two new license, permit and personal ID card versions which applicants can choose from the next time they are due to renew their ID.

With a travel ID, a person can use while traveling in the U.S. or visiting military bases and restricted federal facilities. A standard credential will not allow a person to do either.

This new system is expected to be in place statewide by May.

"They can come up to six months in advance of their expiration date and be able to get the travel ID. I just encourage you to call your circuit court clerk's office before coming, to make sure they're available to do that," said Krissie Coe Fields, Barren County Circuit Court Clerk.

Documents you'll need to apply are proof of identity, social security card NOT laminated and two proofs of residency.

"Go ahead and start looking for those documents," said Coe Fields.

Current and new standard ID's are acceptable for air travel or military base access until October 2020.
