SMITHS GROVE, Ky. (WBKO) -- Kentucky State Police say they pulled a U-haul van over on I-65 near the 40-mile marker on I-65 Tuesday evening and arrested the driver, Adam Smith, and his front seat passenger, Thora Thornton, both of Newark, Ohio, for criminal abuse first degree.

KSP says there wasn't enough room in the cab for Thornton's two siblings to sit, so Smith and Thornton put the children in the back of the van where they were unrestrained. Neither of the children was hurt, but the adults were charged with criminal abuse.

Smith was also charged with DUI, possession of an open alcoholic beverage, speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, and not having his driver's license with him.

Both were taken to the Warren County Regional Jail.
