Owensboro Police Officer shot by homeowner

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WBKO) -- A police officer in Owensboro is shot by a homeowner Wednesday morning.

According to Kentucky State Police, around 5:30 am on Wednesday morning Owensboro Police Officer Zachary Morris, 23 responded to a possible break-in to parked vehicles in the Hathaway and 6th Street area in Owensboro.

The suspect left on foot and Morris chased after.

Officials say Morris then lost sight of the fleeing suspect behind some houses in the 500 block of Hathaway Street.

When the officer checked a fenced-in area at 522 Hathaway, the homeowner of the residence shot at Officer Morris hitting him.

Morris was wearing a ballistic vest but was hit in the lower abdominal area.

He's at Owensboro Health recovering from emergency surgery and is in good condition.
