BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Another scam has been making the rounds in Warren County, and it’s similar to others that have hit the area.
The targets of the scam received an email claiming software was installed on their computer that activated the computer’s camera and recorded the screen activity while the user was allegedly on an adult oriented website.
The scammer said for $315, accepted only in bitcoin, the problem could be resolved. The email also said contacting police would not help the targets of the scam, only paying the ransom would.
The Bowling Green Police Department says scams like these have cost thousands of dollars both in paid out ransoms and repairs to networks, and that the elderly population is being bombarded with these threats and scare tactics.
