Officials say a family of five lost their home on Silent Grove Church Road Tuesday morning in a

According to the Chalybeate Volunteer Fire Department, the first floor collapsed into the basement. Officials say the home is a complete loss.

"You just feel helpless. The family worked so hard to lose everything they got," said Chalybeate Fire Chief Daniel Johnson.

Johnson said by the time he got to the home it was already fully engulfed.

"The house was already pretty well taken over. Everything around on fire, it's just hard to comprehend."

Hours later, flames were still popping up, eating away the snowflakes falling down.

"You focus on one thing so the cold really doesn't set in with you until it's all said and done," said Johnson.

Despite the complete loss of the home, there is something to be thankful for -- the family who lived there is safe.

"The family was not at home at the time, they were out of town," said Johnson.

He said he believes a neighbor was the one who called to report the fire and the family has been notified and they are on their way back to Edmonson County.

"I hope to sit down with them when they come in and kind of figure out some more stuff on this relief effort that we've got going for them," said Johnson.

"Red Cross has also been in touch with them and going to help put them up if they don't have a place or anything they can do along the way, too," he added.

Johnson said the community is taking clothing donations at South Edmonson Elementary School and the 5th/6th Center to help the family get back on their feet. In Bowling Green, donations are also being accepted at the UAW.

Johnson said the family includes a husband and wife and their three young children.

For clothing donations he said they need male clothes for children sizes 6-8 and female sizes 4T-5T, as well as women's jeans sizes 4-6 and size 15. They will also need men's jeans size 36X32. You can also donate medium and XL size women's tops and 2XL men's shirts.

They also need children's shoes sizes 10-11.

Officials say they still don't know what caused the fire at this time.

The Chalybeate Volunteer Fire Department said it took a team to put out the fire including Kyrock, Richardsville, Smiths Grove, and Park City fire departments.
