2006 was the last time Western Kentucky University celebrated commencement outdoors at Houchens-Smith Stadium, but that tradition returned for the graduating class of 2018.
The ceremonies began as all graduates marched from the Kentucky Museum, down Avenue of Champions and into the football stadium.
WKU President Timothy Caboni then recognized several graduates with awards before he and several of the college deans certified the class of 2018 diplomas.
"I thought it was just a terrific celebration of everything we do on the hill," Dr. Caboni said. "Transforming lives and helping young people have opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise, and to sing the fight song together to wind it up is just outstanding,"
On Saturday, graduates will be recognized individually by their colleges within the University at Diddle Arena.
