Bassey Wins Ninth C-USA Freshman Of The Week Award

DALLAS, Texas (WBKO) --- WKU center Charles Bassey averaged a double-double over two Pod 1 victories last week, securing his ninth Conference USA Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week award Monday.

The 6-foot-11, 245-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria, is now one weekly freshman honor away from tying the C-USA record of 10 set by Rice’s Marcus Evans in 2015-16.

Bassey averaged 13.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last week as WKU earned a road victory at UAB and a home win over Southern Miss in the top tier of C-USA Bonus Play.

He notched his league-leading 14th double-double in a 73-67 win against the Blazers on Thursday with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

He then tallied nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks in 31 minutes in Sunday’s 76-71 triumph over Southern Miss.

Bassey shot 52.9 percent from the field during the week and made 9 of 10 free throws. He also grabbed two steals and six offensive rebounds.

The Hilltoppers conclude the regular season against UTSA at 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
