BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO)-- Western Kentucky was without sophomore guard Josh Anderson and graduate senior forward Desean Murray as the school announced both were suspended "for a violation of team rules", but it didn't affect the Hilltoppers as they blow past Kentucky Wesleyan College 96-71 Saturday in their final exhibition contest in E.A. Diddle Arena.
Taveion Hollingsworth played in his first game of the season after serving his one-game suspension on Tuesday and joined Charles Bassey with 24 points to lead the team in scoring.
Jared Savage added 17 points on 5-13 from the three-point line.
"It's been tough," Hollingsworth said about this past week's off-court issues. "We're young. We make mistakes. We've got to grow from it. We're all sorry and we're going to grow. We're going to do better."
The regular season begins Tuesday for the Hilltoppers at No. 25 Washington. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. CT Tuesday in Seattle, Wash. The game will air on ESPNU.
WKU coach Rick Stansbury confirmed that Murray's suspension is indefinite and will not travel to the Tops' season opener Tuesday at No. 25 Washington. Anderson will be able to play.
"I've said this many times, good people make bad decisions," Stansbury said. "Just because you're a good person who makes a bad decision doesn't mean that it's right. There's accountability with it.
"We're not going to have it. We're going to learn from it and get better from it."
