The Old Stone Jail tells the tale of inmates past

FRANKLIN, Ky. (WBKO) -In the historic district of Franklin stands the eerie Old Stone Jail, long rumored to have paranormal activity.

Walking through the cold jail, you feel like someone is watching you.

The jail was built in 1819 and ran functionally as a jail until 1986. It then was later turned into a museum in 1992.

In the jail, you are greeted with lots of archives relating to the jail, the jail operators and the inmates who once lived there.

Billy Wilkerson is the operational manager of Simpson County Historical Society. He’s worked within the jail for six years and has witnessed some supernatural activity.

“In this jail, it’s seen as dark times throughout its history,” he said. “And there was a lot of remnants of that still going on today. You know, if I’m here in the evenings or if I’m here early in the mornings, I literally got to put my earbuds in and listen to music because if not, I hear voices, I hear things moving, I hear feet shuffling. So it’s just things of that nature that still haunts these halls.”

While filming inside the jail, WBKO’s Ananda Wallace also heard banging coming from seemingly nowhere.

The Simpson County Historical Society invites paranormal teams to stay the night in the old jail to gain research and learn more about supernatural activity within the jail.

“It kind of benefits the historical society if we let paranormal teams come in and do their research,” said Wilkerson. “We do get a donation from them to allow them to spend the time here, but we like to keep it as historical location, not a haunted location.”
