Gun Violence Awareness Month renews focus on gun safety for Kentucky families
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - June is recognized as National Gun Violence Awareness Month, but safety advocates across Kentucky are urging families to talk early and often about safe firearm practices — especially with children home for summer and moving between homes.
Nationally, health experts say firearms are now a leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States.
On average, 13 young people die each day in gun-related incidents, according to national research frequently cited by public health groups.
The issue has also been in the spotlight in Kentucky following recent gun-related crimes in larger population centers such as Louisville, where some reported victims have been teenagers.
It starts at home
Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower, says prevention begins with adults — and that secure storage is key to reducing the likelihood of an accidental shooting.
“Keeping firearms locked up — particularly if you have young children — and ensuring they don’t have any access to the firearms at all,” Hightower said.
Hightower said parents should also teach children a simple plan if they ever see a gun: don’t touch it, get away, and tell an adult.
What can families do now?
Gun safety guidance often emphasizes:
- Secure storage: Keep firearms locked up, unloaded, and out of reach of children.
- Separate storage: Store ammunition separately when possible.
- Consistent rules for kids: Reinforce what to do if they see a gun — don’t touch, get away, tell an adult.
- Training for adults: Seek proper instruction on safe handling and storage.
Hightower said repeated exposure to stories of gun violence on social media can also shape perceptions and behavior — making proactive conversations even more important.
